    Stationary entanglement induced by dissipation

    The dynamics of two two-level dipole-dipole interacting atoms coupled to a common electromagnetic bath and closely located inside a lossy cavity, is reported. Initially injecting only one excitation in the two atoms-cavity system, loss mechanisms asymptotically drive the matter sample toward a stationary maximally entangled state. The role played by the closeness of the two atoms with respect to such a cooperative behaviour is carefully discussed.     Design of a Three Surfaces R/C Aircraft Model

    Design of a three lifting surfaces radio-controlled model has been carried out at Dipartimento di Progettazione Aeronautica (DPA) by the authors in the last year. The model is intended to be a UAV prototype and is now under construction. The main goal of this small aircraft's design is to check the influence of the canard surface on the aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics and flight behavior, especially at high angles of attack. The aircraft model is also intended to be a flying platform to test sensors, measurement and acquisition systems for research purposes and a valid and low-cost teaching instrument for flight dynamics and flight maneuvering. The aircraft has been designed to fly with and without canard, and all problems relative to aircraft balance and stability have been carefully analyzed and solved. The innovative configuration and the mixed wooden-composite material structure has been obtained with very simple shapes and all the design is focused on realizing a low-cost model. A complete aerodynamic analysis of the configuration up to high angles of attack and a preliminary aircraft stability and performance prediction will be presented

    Abstract In this paper a validated in-house MATLAB© model was used to assess the behaviour of the Turbec T100 MGT when operated with alternative low lower heating value (LHV) fuels; moreover, the effect of the cycle humidification is assessed. In both the aforementioned cases, the flow rates through the turbomachines, their operating points, and the effectiveness of the recuperator might change and determine performance losses. In particular, the recuperator in a MGT is a crucial component that allows to achieve good thermodynamic performance, also in presence of low compression ratios, and its performance can strongly influence the final output of the machine. Therefore, the aim of the work is to evaluate the effect of the variation of the operating conditions on the performance of the recuperator and, therefore, of the whole MGT. The use of alternative fuels with low LHV and of steam injection shifts the operative points of the turbomachines without strongly affecting their isentropic efficiency; in general, compression ratio is reduced and the flow rate of the compressor is reduced. Therefore, attention must be paid for the compressor stall limit. The recuperator shows a slight variation of the temperature of the fluids, but a higher efficiency is recorded as the flow rate are typically reduced and a better heat recovery performance can be obtained

    Follicular nodules (Thy3) of the thyroid: is total thyroidectomy the best option?

    BACKGROUND: Identification of the best management strategy for nodules with Thy3 cytology presents particular problems for clinicians. This study investigates the ability of clinical, cytological and sonographic data to predict malignancy in indeterminate nodules with the scope of determining the need for total thyroidectomy in these patients. METHODS: The study population consisted of 249 cases presenting indeterminate nodules (Thy3): 198 females (79.5%) and 51 males (20.5%) with a mean age of 52.43 ± 13.68 years. All patients underwent total thyroidectomy. RESULTS: Malignancy was diagnosed in 87/249 patients (34.9%); thyroiditis co-existed in 119/249 cases (47.79%) and was associated with cancer in 40 cases (40/87; 45.98%). Of the sonographic characteristics, only echogenicity and the presence of irregular margins were identified as being statistically significant predictors of malignancy. 52/162 benign lesions (32.1%) and 54/87 malignant were hypoechoic (62.07%); irregular margins were present in 13/162 benign lesions (8.02%), and in 60/87 malignant lesions (68.97%). None of the clinical or cytological features, on the other hand, including age, gender, nodule size, the presence of microcalcifications or type 3 vascularization, were significantly associated with malignancy. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of malignancy in cytologically indeterminate lesions was high in the present study sample compared to other reported rates, and in a significant number of cases Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was also detected. Thus, considering the fact that clinical and cytological features were found to be inaccurate predictors of malignancy, it is our opinion that surgery should always be recommended. Moreover, total thyroidectomy is advisable, being the most suitable procedure in cases of multiple lesions, hyperplastic nodular goiter, or thyroiditis; the high incidence of malignancy and the unreliability of intraoperative frozen section examination also support this preference for total over hemi-thyroidectomy

    Identification alone versus intraoperative neuromonitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgery: experience of 2034 consecutive patients

    Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of intraoperative neuromonitoring in reducing the postoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy rate by a comparison between patients submitted to thyroidectomy with intraoperative neuromonitoring and with routine identification alone. Methods: Between June 2007 and December 2012, 2034 consecutive patients underwent thyroidectomy by a single surgical team. We compared patients who have had neuromonitoring and patients who have undergone surgery with nerve visualization alone. Patients in which neuromonitoring was not utilized (Group A) were 993, patients in which was utilized (group B) were 1041. Results: In group A 28 recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries were observed (2.82%), 21 (2.11%) transient and 7 (0.7%) permanent. In group B 23 recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries were observed (2.21%), in 17 cases (1.63%) transient and in 6 (0.58%) permanent. Differences were not statistically significative. Conclusions: Visual nerve identification remains the gold standard of recurrent laryngeal nerve management in thyroid surgery. Neuromonitoring helps to identify the nerve, in particular in difficult cases, but it did not decrease nerve injuries compared with visualization alone. Future studies are warranted to evaluate the benefit of intraoperative neuromonitoring in thyroidectomy, especially in conditions in which the recurrent nerve is at high risk of injury.     Structural validation of a realistic wing structure: the RIBES test article

    Several experimental test cases are available in literature to study and validate fluid structure interaction methods. They, however, focus the attention mainly on replicating typical cruising aerodynamic conditions forcing the adoption of fully steel made models able to operate with the high loads generated in high speed facilities. This translates in a complete loss of similitude with typical realistic aeronautical wing structures configurations. To reverse this trend, and to better study the aerolastic mechanism from a structural point of view, an aeroelastic measurement campaign was carried within the EU RIBES project. A half wing model for wind tunnel tests was designed and manufactured replicating a typical metallic wing box structure, producing a database of loads, pressure, stress and deformation measurements. In this paper the design, manufacturing and validation activities performed within the RIBES project are described, with a focus on the structural behavior of the test article. All experimental data and numerical models are made freely available to the scientific community

    Commuter aircraft aerodynamic design: wind-tunnel tests and CFD analysis

    The paper presents wind-tunnel tests and CFD numerical aerodynamic analysis of Tecnam P2012 Traveller aircraft. An extensive wind tunnel tests campaign of several different modular aircraft configurations analyzed has been performed on a scaled model in order to experimentally estimate both longitudinal and lateral-directional stability, control derivatives, and to improve the aircraft aerodynamic performances. Simultaneously numerical investigations through a CFD software has been performed, both at wind-tunnel tests Reynolds number (Re=0.6millions) and at free flight Reynolds number of the full scale aircraft (Re=4 or 9 millions). Finally results are compared showing a good agreement in the lift and pitching moment coefficient both with and without control surfaces or flap deflections, and an underestimation of drag coefficient in the CFD numerical analysis. Horizontal tail positions are also tested in wind-tunnel and compared to CFD analysis highlighting how an accurate design leads to improvement both in stability and control. Results will be very useful in the final design of the aircraft and to perform dynamic simulations
